Pfizer has received a number of calls from veterinarians with farmer clients querying the revised with holding periods on Orbenin LA and Clavulox LC intramammery products.
A recent registration clearance has given Orbenin LA and Clavulox LC significantly reduced with holding periods on meat, down from 30 days to only three.
“A number of farmers have been prompted to call their vets and ask if this is not a mis print,” says Pfizer associate product manager Fiona Mansell.
“We are reassuring our veterinary clients that the three day withholding figure is indeed correct. As a result it offers farmers some very flexible options when dealing with cows that are problematic mastitis cases in the herd.”
Farmers on Once a Day (OAD) milking also have greater flexibility with the on label approval for use of Orbenin LA with only three days, or three milkings, with holding period. Cows milked twice a day continue to have an 84 hour or seven milking with holding period.
“The benefits here are not only for those farmers opting for OAD milkings, but also those larger farms that for convenience and time are only wanting to milk their mastitis affected cows once a day.”
The ability of Orbenin LA to clear up severe mastitis infections is partly due to its long acting base and treatment regime, stretching over three applications at 48 hour intervals.
“So being able to clear that cow after only three days post-treatment just gets her back in the herd that much faster,” says Fiona Mansell.
